Message from the President

A new year brings new challenges and new hope that we can achieve even greater things than we have in the past both personally and professionally. Nowhere is this more apparent than at Business Skills College where our students are working hard to realizing their dreams of a better future for themselves and their families.  I applaud all of you who have taken the formidable step toward a better future in spite of all the pain and inconvenience it may bring you in the short term.

A New Year brings new challenges to the College as well.  We have great plans in 2007 that may see the addition of a second campus, new technology, new programs and new policies.  There will be some pain as we change and evolve but the future will be all the brighter for it.

Change is something we all have to get used to in our personal and professional lives as the rapid evolution in technology continues to challenge traditional ways of doing business or living our lives day to day. These changes will continue to transform the business environment and the employees and businesses that are best able to embrace change and run with it are the ones that will survive.

Be prepared for life long learning and lots of upheaval and changes in your future careers. Gone are the days when one would work for one company for 25 years and retire with a pension and gold watch. Typically today employees will work for multiple employers or businesses over their life time and may have to retrain at several junctures in their lives. Businesses need to reinvent themselves from time to time to survive as well.

Embrace change and innovation and life long learning. Don’t be devastated by job loss but prepare and anticipate for it. Keep your skills up to date and ahead of the pack.

For those students who will be job hunting in 2007 make sure your future employers know that vast array of skills you have with your training. Don’t talk about just your diploma but talk about all of the solutions you can provide the position or business and what differentiates you from others with similar skills. Most employers do not know about the vast array of skills you bring to them and will likely have you only use a small portion of them if hired. Make yourself invaluable by providing all of the business skills they need. Make sure they know you can prepare sales presentations with Powerpoint, database management and marketing through Access, preparation of newsletters with Publisher etc. and all of the other skills available to you in your core courses and electives.

For those graduates out in the field keep in touch and keep us current. If there are ways for us to provide more or better skills to make you more effective in the workforce, let us know. By keeping Business Skills College as a relevant and preferred source for employees, you keep the value of your own diploma up there with it as well.

Best of luck to all current students in your studies and career search and to everyone my hopes for a prosperous and safe 2007.
